Engine and cooling

The engine, and the system that keeps it cool.

Timing components, gaskets, water pumps, radiators and hoses.

Ref. 03Engine and cooling

Engine and cooling work belong together because one protects the other. The cooling system carries heat away from the engine, and an engine that runs hot does not stay healthy for long. We work on timing components, gaskets, water pumps, radiators and hoses.

These are often the repairs that decide whether an older car is worth keeping. That is a decision you should make with the facts in front of you, so the estimate shows what failed, with photos, and what else we saw while we were in there.

What it covers

01

Timing components

They keep the moving parts of the engine in step with each other.

02

Gaskets

The seals between engine parts. When they fail, oil or coolant ends up where it should not be.

03

Water pumps

The pump that moves coolant through the engine and the radiator.

04

Radiators

Where the coolant gives up its heat to the air.

05

Hoses

They carry coolant between the parts. Rubber hardens, softens and cracks with age.

When to bring it in

Common signs. Any one of them is reason enough to have it looked at.

  • The temperature gauge climbing higher than usual
  • Coolant on the ground under the front of the car
  • A sweet smell or steam from under the hood
  • Oil spots where you park
  • The coolant level keeps dropping

What happens here

Book a drop-off and tell us what you have noticed. We inspect the engine and cooling system and find where the problem is coming from. You get a written estimate with photos, and the work waits for your approval.

What to tell us when you book

  1. Whether the car has overheated, and what you did when it happened
  2. What colour any fluid under the car is, and where under the car it shows up
  3. Whether you have been topping up coolant or oil
  4. Service records, if you have them

Urgent, or not yet

Overheating and active leaks go in the do now column. A hose that is ageing or a seal that is only damp can often be watched. The estimate tells you which of those you are looking at.

Book it in and we will take a look.

The estimate comes first, in writing, with photos. Nothing is done without your approval.
